What are the GED Tests?
The GED (General Educational Development) Tests offer adults who left school an opportunity to earn a high school credential. GED Tests examinees must demonstrate major skills (twelfth grade competencies that would have been acquired in a four year high school education) in a battery of tests covering five major subject areas.

The GED tests are designed to measure skills and concepts associated with four years of regular high school instruction. Each test is developed by adult and secondary educators and subject matter specialists.

Most test questions require the understanding of broad concepts and generalizations, rather than the ability to recall facts, details or precise definitions. GED Tests use practical and realistic settings that adults will recognize, relevant to adults’ lives. The tests are usually taken over a two-day period. Each of the five tests uses a multiple-choice format, and correspond to the general framework of most high school curricula: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Interpreting Literature and the Arts, and Mathematics.

The GED Tests cannot be taken online. The GED Tests can only be taken at an official testing center—but don’t worry, there are more than 3,400 testing centers worldwide.

The first tests of General Educational Development (GED) were administered in 1942 to World War II military personnel who had not graduated from high school. Initiated by the US Armed Forces, the testing program was extremely helpful to war veterans returning to civilian life. In 1963, the GED program was expanded to serve more civilians and nonveteran adults.
