A civil engineer typical includes duties of the following:
- Analyzing reports and data to plan projects
- Using computer software to draw up designs for transportation systems
- Test materials used to build steel, concrete and other structural materials
- Oversees surveying in construction
- Provides estimates for cost on materials, labor and equipment
Employment of civil engineers is expected to grow 19 percent in the next 20 years as infrastructure continues to age. The median wage for civil engineers in 2010 was on average between $50,000 and $78,000, with the top 10 percent earning more than $119,000.

- Federal Government – $89,450
- Local Government – $80,250
- Architectural – $76,620
- Nonresidential – $76, 120
- State Government – $74,300
You must first maintain at least a bachelors degree in civil engineering. Furthering your education to a Master’s degree is very helpful in this career field as well if you are looking to cross over to a managerial position.
