Is A Career as a Professional Athlete Right For Me?

A career as a Professional Athlete can be very demanding, both mentally and physically. They are required to stay in the best possible shape, year round.

Professional Athletes and Sports Competitors typically do the following:

  • Attend practices and weight training to develop their skills
  • Exercise and practice as directed by coaches and athletic trainers
  • Attend meetings and watch film on their opponents
  • Stay in top physical condition by training and healthy eating
  • Play or compete in their sport, obeying the rules of the sport
  • Watch film and assess how they did after each sporting event, identifying their strengths and weaknesses

Employment for professional athletes is competitive. In major sports, such as basketball and football, only about 1 in 5,000 high school athletes become professionals. However, most professional athletes’ careers only last a few years because of injuries – meaning, yearly replacement needs for these jobs is high, creating somejob opportunities.
